Update from the Western Region TOSC and TAB Programs

September 2002

TAB Technical Assistance Specialist, Jerry Olando, talking with Harold Ball of EPA Region 9.In August, we held the first meeting of our Outreach Advisory Committee (OAC), the group that will help guide TOSC and TAB over the five-year life of our grant. Our thanks to the committee members -- we look forward to their insight and recommendations. Committee members include:

  • Tim Brincefield, Brownfields Coordinator, EPA Region 10
  • Brooks Koenig, Headquarters Brownfields Coordinator, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality
  • Debbie Schechter, Community Involvement Chief, EPA Region 9
  • Lenny Siegel, Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight
  • Kathleen Veit, Program Manager, Community Involvement and Outreach, EPA Region 10
  • Susan Warner, Executive Officer, North Coast Regional Water Quality Board

The OAC's role is to provide oversight of the TOSC and TAB programs to ensure that outreach to communities is effective. They will meet one to two times a year to review program activities, provide recommendations, and provide a link between TOSC and TAB and their organizations.

At the August meeting, outreach staff presented an overview of the Western Region TOSC/TAB program goals and tools. We have attached the presentation to this email and hope it will help you understand our organization's structure and approach.

The OAC meeting took place in conjunction with the first annual meeting of the Western Region Hazardous Substance Research Center, the parent organization of TOSC and TAB. Science and Outreach Advisory Committee members, research scientists, and outreach specialists gathered to exchange information about research projects and outreach activities.

Technical Outreach Services for Communities (TOSC) and Technical Assistance to Brownfields Communities (TAB) are both outreach programs of the Western Region Hazardous Substance Research Center (WRHSRC).  The programs are funded by grants from the US EPA Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response. TOSC and TAB provide free, non-advocacy assistance to communities affected by hazardous waste sites or who are hoping to redevelop brownfields. Through periodic email updates, we hope to enhance communication with our colleagues in the Western Region and beyond. For more information visit: http://tosc.orst.edu/ or call 800-653-6110.
